The Bachelor degree course normally takes 6 semester (3 years) and is credited after a system which is in agreement with European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The study can be started in the autumn semester only.

First and second year of study. The course comprises 27-34 hours per week of the semester during the first two years of study. Of these, only 10-12 hours consist of traditional lectures.

Third year of study. In the third year, 28-33 hours are required per semester, of which only 10-12 hours consist of traditional lectures. To obtain the Bachelor degree, is is possible to choose courses already from the Master degree course. Earned credit points from these courses can only be counted for the Bachelor degree and not a second time for the Master degree!

Courses outside the semesters. During the periods between semesters, a four-week laboratory course with experiments in the areas of chemistry and materials science, as well as twelve weeks of industrial experience (or a project) are to be undertaken.

The industrial experience / project can also be undertaken at another time, such as prior to embarking on the degree course. However, their completion is a requirement for the Bachelor’s degree.

Mentoring Program. All first-year BSc students are assigned to one of the professors of the department in small groups. The program is designed informal and flexible: mentors and students together determine the scope. At least one meeting per semester takes place. The mentoring program is intended to help the students adjust to their new environment, to get in touch with the faculty or to have questions answered that are related to the study course.

Bachelor’s project. The Bachelor’s project, which accounts for 10 credit points, can be carried out in the sixth semester at the earliest.

To obtain the Bachelor's degree certificate, 180 credit points are necessary.

Further Requirements

Obligatory course from the area of Humanities, and Social and Political Sciences. In order to obtain the Bachelor’s degree, a total of four credit points from the area of Humanities, and Social and Political Sciences need to be earned. For a Master's degree, a total of eight such credit points is required. It is however possible to earn the four additional credit points while still in Bachelor degree course.
