Teaching goals

The goal of this course is to provide a basic understanding and first experiences of business management, business plans, business processes and management of change, and to establish a correlation between engineering and BAPM.

Summary and outline

Business and Process Management (BAPM) delivers the crucial business glue that synchronizes the planning, designing, building, operating, maintaining, monitoring and improvement of the capabilities of the enterprise. BAPM is unique in its ability to tame the relentless competitive, service and cost pressures in all organizations. It enables enterprises to continue to adapt faster and faster while enhancing quality.
The course starts with an introduction into basic concepts and experiences with BAPM and gives examples why and where a materials engineer will need BAPM (process mapping, process management, internal and external consulting, investor’s perspective).

The following aspects of BAPM will be covered

- goals and functions for a company
- strategy and core competences
- how to establish a business plan
- business processes and organization in small, medium-sized and global companies
- innovation process (R&D, technology development); product and process development processes
- process to win and execute orders
- customer service processes
- cultural aspects and change management.

The course will be built on several case studies, both from Swiss and international companies, on guest speakers and includes a company visit.
To apply the concepts students will execute group projects establishing business plans and business processes based on real situations.

Literature

Will be provided later.
