MacBook Pro Installation

The installation of the OS on your new MacBook Pro is depending on kind of your work.

There is a significant difference between the installation of the second OS such as Windows, Linux, Solaris or other OSs.

If you are using only sometimes a second OS such as Windows or Linux there is a solution - Parallels Desktop for Mac.
This solution generates a virtual machine running under the primary OS (MacOS X).

The benefits of this solution are:

• No reboot is needed to run an other OS during the primary OS (MacOS X) is running. All other OSs are running at the same time and working directly on the new Intel Core Duo processor. There is no emulation of the secondary OS. The second OS is using the whole Intel Core Duo infrastructure.
• Better possibility to exchange files between the different OSs via Parallels Shared Folders utility.
  

There is only one disadvantage:

• All resources such CPU power and RAM are shared. Every running OS is using a part of CPU power and of RAM.

If you are using both OSs to the same part there is a dual boot solution - BootCamp.

The benefits of this solution are:

• Both OSs are running independent and are using the whole CPU power and RAM only for the actual running OS.
• The work on this stand alone OS is faster because there is no sharing of CPU power and of RAM.
  

The disadvantages of this installation are:

• Each time you will use an other OS you have to close all open files running on the actual OS and reboot the system.
• After reboot you have to select the desired new starting OS.
• The exchange of files is difficult because not all OSs are using the same type of file system (NTFS, FAT, Linux, MacOS...)

Of course there is a possibility to install only Windows- or Linux OS on your new MacBook Pro Core Duo.

The minimal image to install Parallels Desktop for Mac on your MacBook Pro will be
a 10 GB image - a simple drag and drop installation including following apps:

- Windows XP Professional SP2 with all patches (till 18.11.2006)
- Sophos Antivirus Utility
- Cisco System VPN Client
- WinVPP
- Microsoft Office 2003 including Access, Publisher and FrontPage
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Adobe Acrobat Professional

The minimal image to install BootCamp will contain the same apps as the Parallels Desktop for Mac image...
