Education of young undergraduate and graduate students in Materials-Science-oriented fields is one of the major tasks of the Materials Department. Our teaching activities include courses, practical training, and seminars, with the main focus on education of Materials Science students. In addition we provide a basic Materials Science education to students in other Departments, such as Biology, Chemistry, Food Science, Earth Science, Mechanical- and Process Engineering, and Physics.
Undergraduate as well as graduate students do have the possibility to go abroad during their studies. Have a look on the department's guidelines for student exchanges.
The Materials Science degree course is divided into a Bachelor degree course of six semesters and a Master degree course of three semesters. In the first four semesters of the Bachelor degree course, emphasis is placed upon mathematical and scientific fundamentals, while the following two semesters are devoted to basic topics in Materials Science.
Completion of the Bachelor’s degree is a requirement for embarking on the Master degree course. The Master’s course is very flexible in design and therefore lends itself to specialization. The Master thesis, which is intended to be pursued over a period of six months, is normally carried out in the third semester of the Master degree course.
The Master degree is the normal level at which those who have studied Materials Science are able to embark on a career in this field, while the Bachelor’s degree serves as an intermediate step for mobility into other degree courses.
Please notice: The NEW Materials Science Master degree course is going to start in fall 2012!!!
4 semesters/120 credit points: During their four semesters at ETH Zurich students will gain more flexibility and freedom in adjusting the curriculum to their individual objectives. Please inform yourself on our website. It will be updated continuously.
