Development Timeline

The interdisciplinary engineering (IDE) curriculum is currently in the development phase. Launch is scheduled for fall 2025, but might be subject to change.

Preliminary Phase

  • 2019: ETH+ Proposal submitted by students and School Board approved the project for funding.
  • 2020: School Board approached D-MATL to act as a potential host department.
  • 2021: D-MATL agreed to lead the project.
  • July 2021: a formal agreement was signed between D-MATL and ETH Zurich, designating D-MATL as host department and responsible for the development as well as the implementation of the new study program.

Development Phase

  • Since 2022: IDE Project team started to develop and shape the vision and a first concept for the IDE curriculum.
  • 2023: Multiple iterations of the curriculum concept were developed, in cooperation with other departments. Design of the project based learning (PBL) activities commenced.
  • 2024: Finalisation of the curriculum structure and regulations in collaboration with involved departments. Testing of PBL activities commences.

Pilot Phase

Dates might be subject to change.

  • Fall 2025: First cohort of students enroll in IDE program.
  • 2025-2028: Development of IDE MSc curriculum.
  • Summer 2028: First students graduate from IDE BSc.

Operational Phase

Dates might be subject to change.

  • 2028 onwards: Full operation of the BSc and MSc in interdisciplinary engineering.
