Magnetically Aligned Graphite Electrodes for High-rate Performance Li-ion Batteries

Materials researchers from the Battery Materials group at the Swiss Paul Scherrer Institute PSI in Villigen and the Complex Material group at the ETH Zurich have developed a very simple and cost-effective procedure for significantly enhancing the performance of conventional Li-ion rechargeable batteries.

The researchers have successfully demonstrated that graphite flakes can be magnetically aligned in model anodes to increase the lithium storage capacity of the electrode by a factor of between 1.6 and 3 at practical charging rates as compared to a conventional reference configuration.
